Peder and Molly- Here Comes the Sun

April 17, 2012

It takes all photographers time to find their niche in photography. Most of us are driven and motivated by the admiration of other photographers work and constantly seeking out who we are as a photographer. For years, and even still, I have been someone seeking to find my place in this vast world of photographers. When listening to Elizabeth Messina at the WPPI photography convention in Vegas this year, she spoke about something that has changed me.. changed the way I view my own work… changed the way I think during my sessions…. and who I want to continue to push myself to be. She spoke about pulling together many of her images that she loved that she had taken over the years and really finding what it was that made her love that photo. For her, it was a frame within a frame. Now, that may be a hard concept to understand without going into detail… but the point is finding what it is that makes fall in love with certain photos you take. Once you find that one thing… or many things… you begin to find you. It has taken me years to find me and really realize what I leave in a photo that I love…. but I think I’ve found… well… something.

It’s that moment where my couple, my family, my child… forgets, for just a moment that I’m there… and really, truly becomes themselves. If you watched my video… you will hear me say this. This is what I’m continually finding myself chasing during my sessions. In that moment, where I disappear… the true emotion comes out. These moments are those snippets of who my clients are in a split second of their life.

I have been waiting to share this session for a. long. time. Peder and Molly are past wedding clients of mine. They share the kind of love that onlookers admire. They forget about who’s watching and live in the moment. Together. You will recognize this couple if you’ve watched my video as they were the gorgeous couple I was photographing. I was more than thrilled with the gorgeous light, perfect sun kissed grasses,  clothing and props that came together that day. Everything included really added to their story. I not only wanted to showcase a couple who were simply in love, but I wanted them to walk away with photos that reminded them of who they are right now.  Travelors. A writer. Vintage. And In love.

These photos below remind me of what it would have been like watching my Grandpa coming home from war and seeing my Grandma. And a fun behind the scenes note: the suitcase that Peder is carrying is actually my grandpa’s suitcase and still has the tags from many of his trips attached. I love the timeless feel of it.Peder and Molly, I can’t thank you enough for letting me be a part of your story. Thank you for helping realize what I love about my work and for being a part of a new chapter in my business. I am truly grateful and am an admirer of your love together.
