It was supposed to just be an engagement party with some Cinco de Mayo/Kentucky Derby excitement added in. The weather reached 80 degrees that day, which felt like heaven to us all. Just as I pulled up and prepared my super secret entrance into the house, the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up and it began to rain… and thunder… and lightning. This backyard surprise wedding was meant to be an OUTDOOR backyard surprise wedding. As we all watched the radar on our phones, it looked like things would pass quickly….. and even if they didn’t, the groom said… “It’s happening outside even with rain.” Well, rain subsided but family hung out inside. So… I did what I had to. I quickly walked into the house and through the family crowd in the living room. I said hi, but passed through quick enough for no questions to be asked, photo equipment hidden under my jacket. I overheard questions arising about who the woman was that walked through the house, but the groom kept things moving. Finally the family venture to the backyard and our secret plans fell back into place. A first look followed by some sun kissed portraits on their front yard were the perfect start to this memorable day.

Was everyone surprised? Absolutely. 

Did the storm roll in only to part the skies for some amazing sunset light? Yes sir.
